FMD-Day 4

Kristen

Well, happily, I lost 1 pound!!  I have to admit that this is very motivating and the ONLY thing that keeps me going.  So far, in 4 days, I have lost 2.2 pounds, which is unheard of loss for me.  I will try to remember this as I eat meat and vegetables all day...

I did not eat breakfast in the first 30 minutes of waking up, it was more like the first 60.  I had 3 eggs, spinach and onions.  Actually pretty tasty.  I know I am only supposed to use egg whites, but I'm a rebel and used the whole egg, partly because I knew how hungry I was yesterday, partly because I HATE wasting food.

I did not get my morning snack in because I was right smack in the middle of church.  I was starving by the time it was over.  I came home and got lunch ready and boiled eggs.  I might as well get started on my salad rather than continuing to be hungry.  My salad was enormous.  Sadly, though I was tired of eating, I left the table not feeling satisfied or full.  It could be a long afternoon.

After about an hour of feeling as if I didn't eat lunch I caved and ate a delicious protein bar.  The thought of being hungry all afternoon and only being able to eat meat was not going to make for a fun Sunday.  The protein bar worked it's magic and I could take my mind off food for a few hours.

Dinner rolled around and I couldn't wait to be done eating for the day.  I had leftover steak with onions and peppers.  To satiate myself, I had a small amount of rice.  Again I left the table feeling very unsatisfied.  My husband is running Boston in 3 weeks and he had done 18 miles that day so he was starving.  He told me as soon as the kids went to bed he was going to have a nice big bowl of ice-cream.  I told him that I would not be seeing him back downstairs because I couldn't stand to watch him eat something so delicious.  Thank goodness Phase 2 is over!!

FMD-Day 3

Kristen

I only lost .2 pounds.  I will say it was probably because I ate A LOT of chili, knowing I was done with carbs for the next two days, so I don't care too much.

These next 2 days are protein and vegetables only-should be fun.  I made eggs and broccoli mixed with salsa for breakfast.  I am finding that I just can't eat first thing in the morning.  I ate a few bites, then set it aside for my morning snack.  Once the sun came up I did my workout.  For these 2 days you are supposed to lift only, but I am pretending to marathon train so I need to run.  I figured today would be better than tomorrow, so I went out and did my speed workout.  Does anyone else struggle as much as me on speed workouts?

Once I got home and could breathe again, I ate the rest of my eggs-much more tasty this time around.  I ended up counting that as my snack, because frankly I can only eat so much meat a day.  Lunchtime rolled around quickly enough.  I made a nice green salad and topped it with a fair amount of chicken.  I really wanted to use real salad dressing but I topped it instead with spicy brown mustard.  I will admit it didn't taste awful.  I did feel as if I spent a LONG time chewing my food.  Maybe that's the point.

By mid-afternoon, I was starving.  It's not on the food list for phase 2, but I cooked up some shrimp to eat.  It did nothing for my hunger.  Nothing.  My friend called and we talked about it and it was decided that I should eat a banana.  I don't even like bananas that much-actually they don't like me-but it was delicious and just the think I needed.

I had steak and another big salad for dinner, along with a few small bites of my husband's sweet potato.  It was enough to get me through the day and that's about it.

Phase 2 is not fun...

FMD-Day 2

Kristen

Good news-I lost a pound from yesterday.  One of Heidi's complaints is how many times she has to wake up to go to the bathroom.  I did wake up at 3, but I willed myself to go back to sleep because I hate getting up in the middle of the night.

I made oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast.  I could only force myself to eat about half of it first thing.  Once the kids left for school I was feeling hungrier, so I ate the rest.  My morning snack was an apple and some watermelon-I'm drawing it out because I am internally talking to myself about working out.  I know it would be a great choice, but it's rainy ya know?

So I did ride the trainer for an hour.  My whole problem is what to watch while riding and sometimes I'm at a loss.  I decided this would be a day for Sons of Anarchy.  My hour flew by!  I made a chicken/vegetable wrap for my lunch with more watermelon.

By the afternoon, I was starving!  I really wanted a banana as my snack though it's not on the list.  I almost had myself talked into it-it would be much better to eat a banana than say a handful of chips right?  My problem was I was too hungry for fruit that I knew wouldn't fill me up.  But luckily I remembered that I had bought grapefruit and decided one of those would probably do the trick.

I couldn't wait to eat dinner.  And I thoroughly enjoyed every carb-filled bite.  The next 2 days are vegetables and protein only-I may be in trouble...Anyway, I had 2 delicious bowls of chili and brown rice.  I slightly missed the sour cream and cheese, but not too much.  A nice green veggie filled salad rounded out the meal.

I don't know if it's the lack of coffee or the diet itself, but I find myself to be so thirsty in the morning.  I already drank half my water intake for the day by 9:00.  Now I am a big water drinker by nature, but this seems different.  It will be interesting to see if the thirst stabilizes or if it continues.  It does make getting my water intake for the day easy though, so not necessarily a bad thing.

Tomorrow is day 3 the big fat burn begins...

Fast Metabolism Diet

Kristen

Heidi has been talking about this "diet" she's been doing to anyone who will listen.  I've loved the theory behind it, but I always said I can not give up coffee-meaning, I am not willing to give up coffee.  The premise behind this "diet", is to totally clean out your system of all junk and start over.  It's a 4 week plan with 3 sections of eating to each week.  Heidi has been losing some serious weight buy eating in this way.

I saw the book at the library yesterday and decided to read it.  Well, from what the books says, along with watching Heidi, I decided that maybe my morning coffee could be put on hold for 28 days.  I enjoy a challenge and eating completely clean and fresh for 28 days seems to fit the bill.  Please follow along and see where it takes me...

The Night before:
I'll admit, I wasn't totally sold on the no coffee even still, so I set up my pot for the morning and decided maybe it should be a game time decision.  I had no idea what I was going to eat all day as my frig was pretty barren, but I figured I could figure all that out in the morning.  I spent about an hour before bed looking at the daily meal plans and thinking that this is just what I need.

Day 1:
My husband woke up a few minutes before me.  Normally, when this happens I tell him to start my coffee.  This morning I didn't say anything.  The thing with this plan is that you have to eat within 30 minutes of waking up, so I figured I would just trade my coffee for oatmeal.  Normally,  I wait at least 2 hours before eating breakfast and then I am so famished I can barely stand.

I made a bowl of plain oatmeal and added blueberries.  While it was no where near as tasty as my granola or even my coffee, it wasn't the worst thing in the world to eat.

After I got the kids to school I ran 5 miles and then realized it was already snack time.  Along with eating 3 meals you also get 2 snacks a day.  You are supposed to be eating every 3 hours.  I ate an apple while I figured out what I wanted to eat all week, then decided to also eat a clementine, since this shopping was going to take awhile.

Following the plan, I should have been eating lunch at 11:30.  I didn't get home from the store until 12:30.  Normally, with having eaten only a bowl of oatmeal I would be starving.  I felt pretty good.  Once I got the bulk of the groceries put away, I made an Ezekiel wrap filled with vegetables and chicken.  Again, it was a little bland without any dressing, but nothing I couldn't survive.  I also had a nice bowl of watermelon.

I had a few strawberries as I was getting dinner ready as my second snack.  I really wasn't hungry so I kept to a few.  By dinner though I was starving.  I made spaghetti and meat sauce.  I used rice noodles and decided I did not feel like boiling 2 pots of water, so everyone was going to eat rice noodles.  No one seemed to notice anything amiss.  I ate green beans and applesauce with it, not realizing that I was not allowed a fruit.  Oh well.  After dinner, I was still very hungry for quite a while.  I should have made a salad but the thought of no dressing is not overly appetizing to me.

Overall, not a bad first day.  I did not feel hungry most of the day.  I would have loved to have some sugar or coffee, but definitely don't feel as if I would die without it.  I am slightly hungry now, but nothing terrible.  I drank all my water and then some.  I have felt really thirsty all day-not sure what that means.  On to Day 2!

This and That

Kristen

Running has not been easy as of late.  I know I sound like a broken record but really-still winter.  We did have a few nice days and what a difference it makes in the running.  Overall though, I am not getting the miles that my plan requires and I am not the least bit stressed.  I have 11 weeks and I figure as long as I get my long runs, speed workouts and tempo runs I will be fine.  It may not be pretty, but it will be a start into the marathon world.

Heidi and I have started planning our fall race schedule.  It cracks me up that while we are still in winter, we have already missed out on registering for races for next winter-it's a weird humor I know.  What great races are out there though that you would recommend?

Something that drives me crazy is when I am out running and say hi to my neighbors and they ignore me.  It boggles my mind.  Really, you either think you so much better than me to bother with a hello or you are seriously that rude that you can't be bothered.  It's one syllable-2 letters, a nod or quick wave even.  I run past this group of 5-7 ladies who stand outside long after the bus picks up their kids.  Really I do all I can to avoid them, but sometimes, I haven't timed things just so.  Anyway, I literally run 2 feet past them and say hi every single time and not one of them will acknowledge me.

I took my kids to the playground yesterday to kill 10 minutes before I had to drop off my son.  In that 10 minutes, my daughter jumped down from the monkey bars and bashed her foot.  She wasn't in extreme pain but she also couldn't bear weight.  I took her for x-rays this afternoon-thankfully it's not broken.  She is in a boot for at least a week.  Sadly, she just started Girls on the Run this week.  Softball starts tonight.  I'm hoping for a quick recovery.  The school she attends has their cafeteria in the dungeon basement of the school.  I can't wait to hear how that works out for her, considering there is no elevator.

Heidi and I took the bikes out for the first time the other day.  It was awesome until she blew a tire-literally the tire popped.  I thought for a second she was going to crash.  We really need to learn how to change tires.

What I Have Learned in 38 Years

Kristen

Well, today I celebrate 38 years on this planet.  And by celebrate I mean drive my kids around, run a speed workout and daydream of spring.  I always love the blog posts of what people have learned at their birthdays so I thought I would share a few of mine.

1. Be kind.  It's not hard and I promise it will make you feel better.

2. Exercise.  I'm starting to hear the grumblings from those around me who are my age about how their bodies are starting to ache and not work as well.  Take care of it and it will take care of you.  I truly feel as if my body is not 38.

3.  Laugh.  Find the joy in life and when there is no joy laugh anyway.

4.  Be positive.  No one has an easy life, but don't let that bring you down.  I complain as much as the next person but then I find the upside to every situation.

5.  Surround yourself with good friends.  I may not have a ton of friends but the ones I do have I cherish.  I know they will be there for me for anything.

6.   Go to bed early.  I just have to say I love my bed.  I may even go to be earlier than the kids sometimes.  But then I am very productive the next day.  There is nothing better to me than being in bed by 9 and getting up for a 4:30 run in the summer-knowing your run is over and you are showered before most people are even thinking about getting up.

7.  Travel.  Go see the world.  There is so much to see and do.  I love seeing a new part of the world through my children's eyes.

8.  Let it go.  Don't beat yourself up over little things.  We all make mistakes.  Let people go who bring you down.  Don't compare yourself with what everyone else is doing-you are created to be you.

"In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.: Buddha, such a great quote!

Princess Week Part 1...Another Mother Runner Party and The Expo...

Heidi

So I flew into Orlando on Wednesday the 19th.  I couldn't wait to get away from this ridiculous cold and snowy weather.  The flight went smoothly and I waited in the warm sunshine for my best friend April's husband to pick me up.  Life was good.  Never mind I had two races looming that I really wasn't ready for.  I WAS IN FLORIDA!!!

I waited in April's house until she got home from school.  I was so excited to be there.  We quickly went and picked up her daughter, Giannah from school and went on our merry way of hanging out and getting coffee and a late lunch.

Later that evening we went to Another Mother Runner's Orlando party.
(http://anothermotherrunner.com/)  I was super excited when I found out they were doing a party in Orlando and I made April and her friend Pricilla sign up to go with me.  It was held at Fit2Run at the Florida Mall. We got a really cool swag bag with Sofsole Socks and Action Wipes among other fun stuff in it.  We didn't win any giveaways but we had a good time and even got a pic with Dimity.  (Yes she is that tall and I  told April I wouldn't post this pic but it is my only one so sorry April!!)

Me, Dimity and April...

After all of the goods were given away and we drank our drinks and ate our food, we rolled out of there.  They are having another party in Philly in April.  I hope that Kristen and I get chosen to go to that one too.  If anyone is interested in going, go onto their website and hit "join us" and "AMR in person."  This was a good start to a fun running week.

The next day April drove to her class and I took her car to go to the expo.  It was about a 35 minute drive to ESPN at Disney.  By the time I got there and waited in line for our bibs and shirts, and then the line for the runDisney merchandise I wanted,  I knew I wouldn't have much time to shop at the expo and then hit Downtown Disney for my oh so important Ghiradelli's chocolate milkshake.  The plan was for me to get our bibs etc and after we picked Giannah up from school we would head back to the expo for April to shop too.  Well glad we did because by the time I got all of our stuff and waited in line twice for runDisney merchandise (yes twice because they didn't have everything I wanted in the first building so I had to get it at the second building), I pretty much had to roll to pick April up.  runDisney has this thing down to a science though.  The longest lines I waited in were for the runDisney stuff.  The lines for bib pick up and shirts were not too long.

The good thing was, I already did the time consuming stuff.  So when we returned it was all shopping for us.  Of course, the lines for the runDisney merchandise were now short and they still had all of the stuff that I bought.  Oh well.  It was time well spent...I guess.

So I wanted to buy a blue sparkle skirt from http://sparkleskirts.com/ and a sparkle visor from http://sparkleathletic.com/ to complete my Cinderella outfit for the half.  I planned on being Tinkerbell again for the 10k since I already had that get up from what else...Tink.  Ha Ha.  April was Belle for both of the races but she had a really cool tutu made from somebody on etsy and she wanted a skirt for the 10k.  So she bought her skirt and visor from sparkle athletic.  We looked around at the other vendors.  I have to say I really love how the shirts from Raw Threads  http://www.rawthreads.org/ feel.  One day I will buy one for my next running costume.  (More to come on that later!!!!  I can pretty much say it won't be a stinking princess.)  But if you need a princess, etc top, they are awesome.

Cindy and I...if only that is how I looked when I was running the half.

Not one but two Princes...April didn't want to take a pic with them so I guess they are both mine!!!

April and I at the expo...

I am pretty sure Giannah was ready to go...

So that was Day 2 of Florida.  We were all ready for the races.  Well at least our costumes were ready.
